Children
Overview
Sunday mornings at The Downtown Church are filled with corporate worship, praise and a message from the Bible that's relevant to your life. The service is for the whole family.
Children’s Church Format
We believe that parents - before anyone else - are responsible for the spiritual nurturing of their children. As parents shepherd their children through Scripture, our ministry serves as reinforcement to their teaching. (Deut. 6:5-9; Psalm 145:4)
This is one of the reasons we've chosen a “Children’s Church” format that focuses on corporate family worship and a separate Bible teaching time for ages Pre-K thru fifth grade. Sixth graders and up are invited to stay for the expositional preaching of the Word because we believe that children are empowered by the Holy Spirit to rightly understand the Word of God.
The curriculum is relevant for a large age range. This, along for practical reasons, is why we do not segment children into distinct peer groups.
Curriculum and Class Structure
We use the “Children Desiring God” Curriculum. Here's a snapshot of the curriculum's goal and what's being taught for the 2009-2010 school year.
Excerpt from Children Desiring God: “The greatest need children have is to know and cherish the infinite value of God. Therefore, we want children to become so acquainted with the Word of God that they treasure Him alone as the One who saves and satisfies the heart. The goal of our curriculum is to fuel spiritual desire in children by exalting the greatness and worth of God and His glorious work through Christ.
Where do we want our children to be 10 or 20 years from now? Can churches grow mighty oaks of righteousness without intentionally nurturing the saplings under their care? The deep-rooted faith we desire for our children--a faith that weathers the storms of life and bears fruit for the glory of God--is nurtured by a systematic plan to partner with parents in communicating the greatness of God, the glory of Christ, and the power of the Gospel."
