Children

Overview

Sunday mornings at The Downtown Church are filled with corporate worship, praise and a message from the Bible that's relevant to your life. Children join parents in the worship service for praise and adoration and then have the opportunity to hear an age appropriate message from God's Word in One Way.

Children’s Church Format

We believe that parents - before anyone else - are responsible for the spiritual nurturing of their children.  As parents shepherd their children through Scripture, our ministry serves as reinforcement to their teaching.  (Deut. 6:5-9; Psalm 145:4)

This is one of the reasons we've chosen a “Children’s Church” format that focuses on corporate family worship and a separate Bible teaching time for ages Pre-K thru fifth grade. Sixth graders and up are invited to stay for the expositional preaching of the Word because we believe that children are empowered by the Holy Spirit to rightly understand the Word of God.

The curriculum is relevant for a large age range.

Class Structure and Curriculum

We use the “Children Desiring God” Curriculum during the school year.  One Way is divided into three age groups Preschool, Grades K-2 and Grades 3-5.  "Children Desiring God" curriculum is relevant for  a large age range and therefore works well with our class structure. Children can always expect to hear God's Word taught at their age appropriate level.  Each class has time set aside for teaching and Scripture memory.

One Way Blue Group:  Preschoolers age three - Pre-K journey through the Old Testament this year  with "He Established a Testimony" .

One Way Green Group: Grades K-2 examine God's faithfulness in "God Always Keeps His Promises".

One Way Orange Group: Grades 3-5 learn how the names of God, names of Jesus, and a name for the Holy Spirit reveal God's character with "How Majestic is Your Name".

Excerpt from Children Desiring God: “The greatest need children have is to know and cherish the infinite value of God. Therefore, we want children to become so acquainted with the Word of God that they treasure Him alone as the One who saves and satisfies the heart. The goal of our curriculum is to fuel spiritual desire in children by exalting the greatness and worth of God and His glorious work through Christ.

Where do we want our children to be 10 or 20 years from now? Can churches grow mighty oaks of righteousness without intentionally nurturing the saplings under their care? The deep-rooted faith we desire for our children--a faith that weathers the storms of life and bears fruit for the glory of God--is nurtured by a systematic plan to partner with parents in communicating the greatness of God, the glory of Christ, and the power of the Gospel."
